What is the Ozone layer?
Kids Corner - Kids
Ozone is a blue coloured gas, which smells like garlic. It is present in the oxygen in the air following thunderstorms, near big electrical machines when they are working, and especially high up in the atmosphere.

Ozone is a powerful oxidiser which can rust all metals except platinum and gold.

It is also a disinfectant, germicide, deodorant and bleach and one of its most important uses is the sterilisation of drinking water and swimming baths.

Other uses include preserving food, whitening paper and sugar and the preparation of perfumes and medicines.
Around 20km above the earth is the ozone Layer, which blocks out the harmful ultra-violent rays of the sun.
If this layer is reduced or punctured, these rays can heat up the earth, causing variations in climate, skin diseases, and changes in the growth of plants and the supply of plankton on which the fish feed.
